Abstract
Recent reports have provided evidence that some growth factors are involved in hair growth and morphogenesis. Hair follicle growth has been found to be inhibited by EGF, EGF-2 and TGF-¥â, while such growth was stimulated by the administration of paracrine growth factors such KGF(FGF-7), IGF-I and HGF. Homozygous null mice lacking the FGF-5 gene were found to produce abnormally long hair, while those lacking the KGF and/or TGF-¥á gene produced a rough and/or wavy hair coat, vibrissae in vitro, stimulates proliferation of cultured hair matrix cells in vitro, and modulates the hair cycle of murine coat in vivo. The mechanisms controlling cyclic hair growth will be further investigated in conjunction with growth factors and their signal transducti
